A new life, a new blog

I’m getting married!!!! I know it’s really old news now to those who know me. hahaha… Jon proposed on our 4th year anniversary on 17 Jan 2012.

As part of our new life together, I bought us a domain at www.theyangones.com to document our journey towards getting married and beyond… initially wanted to use that as a blog too, but haven’t had the time to figured out all the kinks so thought I’d just start a new blog at theyangones.blog.com

Then I’m now confused as to having so many blogs!!!! I guess I’ll still blog here once a while as my own personal blog, but keep theyangones to our life together… We shall see how…. :-p

My Granny

It’s been a week since Granny left us. I really miss her loads. I guess I never really got over losing my grandpa, and losing my grandma last week just adds on to it. :-(

Since young, I have been very close to my grandparents… in fact, mama (my granny) always talks about how I would follow her and kongkong (my grandpa) all over the place. I never seemed to have missed my parents when i travelled all over with them. I guess it’s coz since young, i knew i’d be safe and loved with my grandparents.

I remember growing up they were always there for me, very loving and supportive. I have never recalled any incident that they would ever scold me. In fact, i don’t think they have ever scolded ANY of their grandchildren.

I remember kongkong would come fetch me, my sister and my cousin after school everyday. Without fail, he will be on time. And whenever something is spoilt, kongkong will jump at the opportunity to help me fix it, especially my shoes. Hehehe… Mama will also teach me to diy stuff, like chinese new year decos and all. I would like to think that that is where i got my knack for doing things diy and being creative. yeap, that’s definitely it!

I also remember kongkong always wanting to learn new things, like the english language. He used to have loads of notebooks filled with english words that he had learnt. So cute!!!! Granny on the other hand, loved to shop! (i think that’s where i got my shopping addict habits from. hahaha). She would buy anything and everything that she could, and make plans on who can fit into it later on! hahaha…

In the later years when I started uni and kongkong was not too well anymore, it was my turn to bring them out to lunch and boy did i look forward to those moments! In fact, i wish i didn’t stop when kongkong no longer could walk on his own. I regret that as i grew older, i went home less…. And when kongkong left, i told myself i must spend more time with mama… I dunno if i achieved that, but i sure hope i did. My only regret is not spending even more time with her, and not taking as many pics with her as i could. :-(

During the funeral, there were so many things i wanted to say about my wonderful granny but i didn’t manage to. Once i reached the podium and introduced myself, i broke down in tears… I din even get to say a single line from what i wrote properly…. Sigh…

Mama and Kongkong, you know i will miss you terribly. You will ALWAYS be in my heart, and mind. I’m glad that you are finally together again, and i will look forward to seeing you again at the end of my journey on earth.

Love you both LOADS!!!!!!!

With my beloved grandparents

First Post!

Hahaha, must be confusing. This is not my first post here.

Rather, I just started a new blog, just to blog on my cooking (mis)adventures!

Just posted the first post on The Pink Cook

Baked a cake for mom’s bday, first attempt. Pretty successful! Loved this recipe and it’s a keeper! :-)

Food!

Have settled down into the new place rather nicely.. Am amazed of the amount of shops that are 24 hours over here! I know I’ll never go hungry. That being said, the shops here are a lil like village shops, i cannot get my angmoh food fix!!! like if i wanted bacon or ham, i won’t be able to find it here!

Anyway, love this new place. Much larger and more space to put my stuff. I even bought a digital piano! Yeap, how nice eh? It’s a really slim one, so fit really nicely in the hall. Needed that coz have just started playing for Jon’s catholic church and I got really stressed the first 2 weeks when I didn’t have the piano to practice everyday. Now i’m enjoying about an hour to 2 each day playing away. Hahaha… I doubt I had ever wanted to practise this much back in those days when i had to practice for my exams, etc

My aunt teng also have shifted place, and she gave me a convection oven. The BEST thing in the kitchen right now! Have been using it to test out baking and grilling recipes and so far, my guinea pig is still alive! (lol, i mean Jon la)

Had been struggling with cooking chicken properly in that oven tho, coz i have to manual to refer to… Luckily i found out that I need to brine my chicken at least 12 hours before and then the meat will have some taste to it, so I tried it yesterday and brine’d the drumlets for about 12-14 hours and then grilled them this morning. Not bad! At least they were no longer tough (they were frozen to begin with) and at least the meat had some taste to it already! Now to perfect the recipe of grilling the drumlets, and then to move on to a whole roast chicken!

Been obsessed with trying out new stuff in the kitchen, i think mainly coz now it’s so much larger and i have the space to bake and all… So as time goes, i may just post stuff that I’ve experimented doing and have gotten away with it rather successfully…

House Search

Whew, house searching is such a chore! Am glad that i’m down to my final years of living like a nomad. Hahaha…

Actually it’s such a pity to leave this place I’m currently staying in. I love that the place is so bright and cheery, but on the other hand, the place is falling apart. The aircon is leaking terribly and is not cold (it has been like that from the beginning but owner just refuses to do anything about it!), the bathtub is leaking, the toilet bowl seems to be filling itself all the time, it’s SUPER dusty but most importantly, owner is trying to sell it away, coupled with rising rental rates, it’s time to move on and back to HDB. After all, in the end we will be shifting into our HDB flat at the end of these 2 years so gotta get back to the HDB life, which i’m not complaining coz of the convenience in getting food and all.. So, after living in Singapore for more than 10 years, can say i’m quite seasoned and well-exposed, having stayed in so many estates and a mix of HDB & Private. hehehe…

Found a place in Bedok Reservoir… It’s pretty small, but with 2 bedrooms, i can convert one into a home office in which we can work out of… Really looking forward to working from a desk compared to a couch that i’m working out of now… It’s a lil darker, coz there are very little windows in the living room, but i suppose it means the place can be very cozy… It is bare, nothing at all, except for the heater and air con in the rooms, but thank God i have furnitures that has to be brought over, so prob only a few more touches and the place will be quickly and comfortably filled up. After all, it is temporary for the next 2 years…

The price was a lil steep and we managed to negotiate it down. Now it’s just a hundred more than what i’m paying for, but i’m quite happy with it coz for a 2+1 bedroom, it is about 300-400 cheaper than the market rate.. Besides, it’s a road away from all the shops and places to eat. Hopefully won’t go fat coz Macs is just across the road! Hahaha… Can save on Mac delivery now!

Really hope this comes thru tho, if it does, then it ends the (short) search for a place. It’s not my ideal place, but it’s a close to ideal price. Rental costs in Sg is SUPER high now. Goodness!!!! I’m glad that God is always so kind and merciful to me and my loved ones. He provides when we need and therefore, he has always watched over me when I try to settle my stuff. Thank God! :-)
